Transferring Administrative Burden onto Parents as a Means of Compliance
The fundamentals of mathematics is an essential component of receiving a proper education. Numeracy includes the ability to identify quantities, cause and effect, sequence, patterns, sorting by characteristics, and spatial awareness. Leading a child into multiplication and division also requires acquiring new vocabulary such as dividends, factors, multiples, and products. We want our children to graduate from our school system fluent in the application of numeracy, to understand and interpret and use mathematical information in real-world contexts.
So here’s an equation for the adults in the room to solve:
Mahmoud v. Taylor (The Right to Opt-Out) x MCPS’s Refrigerator Curriculum (“One-page, easy-to-read overview”) = ?
The answer = Compliance. A quick look at the website and the forms provided for kindergarten to Grade 12 shows MCPS’ seeming faithfulness to the description of the solution they provided in order to be compliant with the ruling. All a parent of a Fifth grader has to do, for example, is click on the link and everything is there!
