Why She’s Running

 

MCPS spends $3.78 billion a year. Only 22% of students pass Algebra I. Only 54.9% of third graders read at grade level. That is not a funding problem. It is a leadership problem. Brenda is running to fix it.

  • Rebuild academic excellence — Whole books, textbooks, and knowledge-rich curriculum in every classroom. Explicit instruction in reading and math. Less technology, more learning. Classrooms focused on science, literature, history, and math — not the controversies of the moment.
  • Make schools safe — Restore School Resource Officers. Enforce the Student Code of Conduct. Pass a Teachers’ Bill of Rights. Fix mold-ridden, crumbling buildings. Safe buildings produce focused students.
  • Put parents first — The current Board dismisses parents and rubber-stamps decisions. Brenda will demand transparency, genuine community engagement, and a Board that finally treats parents as the key stakeholders they are.
  • Spend wisely — End wasteful spending. Attach performance metrics to every budget. Make every dollar reach students, not bureaucracy.

Every child deserves a rigorous education — regardless of zip code, income, or background.

Whole books and textbooks in every classroom. Grade-appropriate assignments. Explicit instruction in reading and math. Classrooms focused on science, literature, history, and math — not the controversies of the moment. Less technology, more learning. After-school tutoring for students who are behind. The true school-to-prison pipeline is illiteracy — and we cannot wait.

Restore School Resource Officers — endorsed by MCPS principals, proven to build relationships and keep schools safe. Enforce the newly-revised Student Code of Conduct consistently. Pass a Teachers’ Bill of Rights to restore order and discipline. Safe schools produce focused students — and Brenda will fight to make every MCPS school safe.

Boost Morale among Teachers
Teachers must be masters of their content. Their knowledge is students’ greatest resource.

Fully equipped schools — functioning copiers, printers, and materials. Curriculum that drives excellence, not endless digital platforms. Targeted professional development in content knowledge, not ideology. Classroom visits and one-on-one meetings so teachers feel heard. When teachers thrive, students thrive.

Ensure Responsible Resource Allocation through Diligent Oversight
$3.78 billion should reach students — not bureaucracy.

End the rubber-stamping. The current Board reduced annual business meetings from 24 to 12 and moves millions through consent agendas without contract review. Every dollar must be tracked, justified, and tied to student outcomes. Eliminate redundancies. Redirect savings to classrooms, teachers, and buildings.

Encourage & Respect Parental Involvement & Community Engagement
Parents are not an afterthought. They are the most important stakeholders in their children’s education.

Neighborhood schools are community anchors — not assets to be relocated without community input. Genuine, multilingual community engagement — not check-the-box surveys. Parents must have a real seat at the table. The current Board dismissed parents, local leaders, and entire communities in its March 26 vote. That ends when Brenda joins the Board.

The Gilded Cage persists, and your child is the captured, precious bird, in the middle of it. When the First Lady of Maryland, the State Superintendent of the MD Department of Education, and the Superintendent of MCPS visit our local elementary schools during the first week of the school year, publicly praising teachers for decorating their classrooms, we’ve got to be frank.
